Check if the local services:Network DDENetwork DDE DSDM are running... Had the same problem, both services were disabled, after setting both to automatic and manually starting them the error no longer...

I have Adobe Acrobat X, I opened services.msc, found Network DDE disabled, enabled it, then started it, along with it's dependencies. Seems to help.

Killing the process tree seems to be the trick. We're running Acrobat standard 9.2. Killed the process and Acrobat worked like a charm.

To follow up on the above, things worked fine after the repair until this morning when it started happening again. I killed the Adobe processes and can open docs again, but damn, what a pain!

In my case, it turned out to be an add-in that was preventing Acrobat from opening.I found which one was the problem from the Event Viewer.HTH

I had the same issue with Reader XI on Win 8.1 Symantec EndPoint SecurityIn my case it fixed disabling thanks to who posted this:Protected Mode from Edit>Preferences>Security (Enhanced).
